Проблем с валидиране на HTML

Седнах днес да си валидирам страничките и ето какво ме спъна ..

Имам вертикално меню направено с <li> , но ми показва, че липсва елемент като ul", "ol", "menu", "dir". Като го добавя menu или dir не се оправя, а с ol или ul се оправя, но пък всеки бутон на менюто става като списък.. В css-а написах list-style: none; но не се получи. А и ето го менюто на което дава грешка:

<li><a href="index.php">Начало</a></li>
<li><a href="history.php">История</a></li>
.............
