<h2>1977-1991

<img src="img 0336.jpg" align="right" height="150">
Tarja Soile Susanna Turunen Cabuli is mainly known as the former vocalist of the Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish. She is currently performing under her given name Tarja and was born on 17 August 1977 in the Finnish town Kitee (about 500 inhabitants) in Karelia, near the Russian border. She spent her childhood alongside her two brothers, seven years older Tim and five years younger Toni. Her parents, Marjatta and Teo Turunen, supported her positive relationship to music from her childhood, especially because they gave her opportunity to visit lessons of choral singing and piano. Tarja received her first piano when she was 6 years old. She still plays it someday and remembers a time when as a little girl sitting on the table was singing to her whole family.
<br>
<br>
<img src="img 0337.jpg" align="left" width="200">
When she was 6 years old, she began to attend music school and primary school in Kitee, where she was the only girl in class. Young Tarja was often bullied by older classmates because of her talent diversity, from what the singer suffers by troubles with her stomach. It was clear from the very beginning that her priority is music education and as a natural perfectionist she reached excellent results. Her first piano teacher was Kirsti Holopainen, mother of Tuomas Holopainen, who was later at the beginning of Tarja's musical career. In addition of classical piano lessons she also attended flute lessons and learned a little bit of the basics of playing guitar and drums, but she never devoted to it intensely. When she was thirteen years old, Tarja focused her interest in singing, but without genre. She was inspired by her idol Whitney Houston and Sarah Brightman, whose interpretation of the song "Phantom Of The Opera" woke up the flame of love for classical singing in Tarja.
<br>
<br>
<br>
<h2>1992-1998
</h2>
When she was fifteen years old, Turunen celebrated the first success, when performed at a concert in the local church in Kitee, which was accepted more than positive.
<img src="img 0338.jpg" style="margin: 0px 6px" align="left">
With ambition to develop her music abilities, Tarja enrolled to study at music college Savonlinna, where she began to study a classical singing under the guidance of Karina Ollily. Tarja was the first student who graduated from this school with the best possible rating.
<br>
After study in Savonlinna Tarja was accepted at the Sibelius Academy of music Kuopio in 1996, this time she studied at the department of "classical church music". It was interesting that she was the youngest student in the classroom. Thanks to hard work Tarja became a lyric soprano (before that she was dramatic mezzo-soprano) and got a degree in classical singing.
<br>
During 1996 Tarja was asked by her former classmate of Kitee, Tuomas Holopainen, to sing the vocals for his first demo. Tarja sang three songs, one of which was called Nightwish. Tuomas was pleasantly surprised by her voice that he argued her into future cooperation. That time nobody knew what a revolution in the world of music, a band named after the very first written song reaches.
<br>
Although the publishers weren't interested in the first demo, second one more metal oriented, convinced Spinefarm Records label to release their first album "Angels Fall First" in 1997. The album had very good response by the public and critics and Nighwish had their door to the music world opened. Then the first concert tour came that ended up rather inconsistently - contrast between great music and comic stage presentation of band members forced them to record their performances on tape and analyzed them later.
<img src="img 0339.jpg" align="right">
Tarja especially was going through a difficult time, metal scene was something completely new and unexplored for her, so as a classical singer she had to find a compromise between metal and classical music. It wasn't easy for her at the beginning, even when they was recording the album it was accompanied by tears, when she was trying to sing difficult high-pitched vocal lines.
<br>
<br>
In the year 1998 second album "Oceanborn" was released, which in Finland was ranked first place in the marketability and it brought gold disc to Nightwish. After that they did two big tours in 1999 and a year later the european tour in a position of supporting band for known German band Rage. The band remembers those times as great, they especially remember some of the special experience of concerts, when after the completion of their set half of visitors left.
<br>
<br>
Although Nigthwish was clearly the priority for Tarja, this charismatic soprano found time for appearances in a variety of projects. This becomes her passion for life. In 1999 Tarja got one of the main roles (as an angel) in a modern ballet based on heavy metal music called "Evankeliumi", which took place in several sold-out performances in the Finnish National Opera and she also participated as a chorus-signer in Savonlinna world famous opera festival.
<br>
<br>
<br>
<h2>2000-2005
</h2>
In May 2000, after the breakthrough album "Wishmaster", which won many awards both in Europe and South America, Nightwish went on a big tour across Europe, South America and even appearances in North Korea in 2001. During the South American tour in Mexico Tarja was attacked by fanatical fans on the stage, even though she was in shock moreover supported by insensibility of the rest of the band, she finished the concert. Her big support was a quiet and discreet Marcelo Cabuli, who plays very important role in Tarja's life since that time. That year was also released first DVD "From Wishes To Eternity", shot on New Year's Eve 2000 in finish Tampere and EP "Over The Hills And Far Away". Nightwish have become global pioneer in metal music based on classical singing associated with melodic guitar solos and soundtrack elements, which was unofficially and improperly called "Opera (tic)" metal. Tarja captivated many fans by her beautiful voice and her charisma gave an indelible stamp to the band. During that time she started to be called "Metal Queen", which she really deserves even nowadays.
<br>
<br>
<img src="img 0340.jpg" align="left">
In 2001 the whole band decided to take a break because of some disagreement between members of the band. Tuomas even thought about dissolution of the band. Fortunately everything was settled when a bassist Sami Vanska was replaced by Marco Hietala, who apart from playing bass could also sing. It created a contrast between operatic voice and growling (we can hear it in "Beauty And The Best") and it also meant that Tarja could slow down a bit.
<br>
<br>
Tarja used this official break for further study of classical singing, this time at university in German Kalsruhe, where she was enrolled thanks to her previous excellent study results. Germany offered Tarja a normal life without any publicity and attention around her that surrounded her in Finland. Her voice became expressive lyrical soprano thanks to this study.
<br>
Soprano and mezzo-soprano Mitsuko Shirai said about her student Tarja: "For the first time I saw Tarja at the entrance examination for the Music University in Karlsruhe. She didn't even apply for solo singing but I recognized immediately that she is somebody who puts a lot of personal feelings into her singing. I liked that and so I encouraged her not letting herself train to be a choir singer but a lead singer. - I can imagine that she is a real highlight in the rock scene with her unusual voice. In my opinion she has only used 80 to 85 percent of her voice's classical potential. Even today she still visits me to work with her voice. As a student and as a human Tarja Turunen is a pleasant and sensitive woman."
<br>
<br>
Tarja managed difficult studies very well and she also participated in many international projects. At the end of 2001 she hosted on the album of the South American guitarist Beto Vasquez called "Infinity". She cooperated with vocalist and front man of the band Edenbridge, Sabina Edelsbacher or with a longtime partner of legendary singer of Led Zeppelin (Robert Plant), Candice Night.
<br>
<br>
Marco Hietala brought a life-giving sap into Nightwish and a new album "Century Child" (released in 2002) showed which way the band was going. Harder guitar sound, the use of complex orchestral lines and choirs, all of it forced Tarja to go forward and learn how to use her voice on 100%.
<img src="img 0341.jpg" align="left">
The world tour "World Tour Of The Century" was even more successful and resulted in sold-out the German Arena in 2003. Tarja took and advantage of the autumn break and went on a small tour of classical concerts in South America called "Noche Escandinava" ("Scandinavian Night"), where she presented with other singers classical scandinavian songs.
<br>
<br>
At the end of 2002, she married her longtime partner, argentinean businessman Marcelo Cabuli, the owner of a South American record company "NEMS Enterprises". Shortly after their marriage her husband became her manager.
<br>
<br>
Despite the fact that a year 2003 should have been more relaxed, Nightwish decided to organize a small tour called "End Of Innocence" and they also released eponymous DVD. In the autumn of that year, Tarja had to cancel her studies in Germany because of the serious illness of her mother and returned to Finland. A time which she spent in her, she used to organize the first of the series of Christmas concerts, which took place in the town of Kuusankoski, where she settled down later on. In December, the finnish president Tarja Halonen invited Tarja to the Presidental palace, to celebrate Finnish Independence Day, the most important holiday in the country. Accompanied by her husband throughout the whole evening, she shone and her dress had been declared as the most beautiful robe of the event.
<br>
<br>
<img src="img 0342.jpg" align="right">
After the graduation at the Music Academy in Karlsruhe, in January 2004, Tarja had further minitour "Noche Escandinava" in South America and Romania. She also started to fulfill her pedagogic ambitions and she organized a course for some enthusiastic students of singing in Buenos Aires.
Followed by recording and releasing the album "Once", for the first time Tarja was satisfied with her vocal performance. "Once" surpassed all previous albums in sales, perhaps due to a mostly known single "Nemo". Then Nightwish went on 17 months long tour "Once Upon A Tour", where Nightwish played 130 concerts in five continents. The band released it's first international edition of best "Highest Hopes".
<br>
Tarja despite a huge workload with Nightwish has found time for her solo project and in 2004 released the single "Yhden Enkelin Unelma", which contained christmas songs. She was already thinking of leaving the band at that time, her motivation was ambition in the field of solo career, especially the possibility of another musical direction and also the increasing disagreement between the members of the bands that meant Tarja's excommunication by Marco and Tuomas in past two years. The band was aware of hers plan two years ahead, according to agreement she had to sing at the last common album and complete the associated tour. Another side project, which was released this year, was working with Martin Kesici (winner of the German Idol competition) on the duet "Leaving You For Me". As a family assistance she sang choral vocals on her brother Tim's debut album. Her voice also appeared on deluxe version of Schiller's album "Tag Und Nacht", where she participated as the author in the song "Tired Of Being Alone".
<br>
<img src="img 0343.jpg" align="left">
On 21 October 2005 the final concert of "Once" tour was held. It was the most important concert held in native Finland (Hartwall Areena in Helsinki), which was accompanied by extensive media campaign, as the whole concert was filmed on DVD. Tarja, though she was sick, brought as well as whole band a perfect performance. Immediately after the concert she received a letter and was immediately fired from the band. This open letter to the public soon flew the entire world and cause Tarja vs Nightwish is scrubbed among fans today. After the stressful event Tarja decided to leave Finland moved to her husband to Argentina. In response to the matter with an open letter she has written decent letter to fans, which described her point of view, for journalists she spoke at press conference in Berlin and Helsinki, and her husband answered fan's questions on the Tarja Turunen vs Nightwish cause on the official website. This from her side very quietly closed topic and Tarja could fully pay attention to her solo singing activities.
<br>
<br>
<br>
<h2>2006-2010
</h2>
Before recording a regular solo album she decided to pursue a long-planned Christmas project and just a few weeks after a career with Nightwish ended she took her Christmas tour to Finland, Spain, Germany and Romania, where she presented Christmas carols in the acoustic version. In the free time she have tried actress role in the Finnish sitcom "Paarolissa" (unconventional mother of very intelligent child) and "Studio Impossible" (played herself in a situation comedy, where she was kidnapped by a young ambitious band). For a short while she also published in the newspaper "Karjalainen". On April 2006 she hosted in the swedish musical "Spin", where she sang songs by the Beatles and the Bee Gees. In June of the same year she traditionally attended Savonlinna opera festival, this time as a soloist alongside finnish tenor Raimi Sirki, together they sold out two concerts, which raised songs like "Song To The Moon" (Rusalka), "Do Not Cry For Me Argentina", "The Mio Babbino Caro", "La Traviata", or classics from Nightwish like "Angels Fall First" of "Beauty And The Beast".
<img src="img 0344.jpg" align="right">
In August appeared on the Lahti Organ Festival and on action of clothing company "Marimekko" she surprised by a song by Nirvana. Despite the workload with her own concerts and charity events for "UNICEF" she managed to record a Christmas album "Henkays Ikuisuudesta", at the same time by Tarja's wish single "You Would Have Loved This" was released, designed exclusively for the finnish and argentine market. Album had a huge success in Finland and received a platinum award. In 2006 "Henkays Ikuisuudesta" tour followed in Finland and Russia.
<br>
<br>
Led by argentinean opera singer Marta Blanco Tarja further developed her voice capabilities. Her home has become equally Buenos Aires and Kuusankoski. In 2007 she worked hard on the new album, which should put her into the world of metal music once again. After many months of work and many complications (the album was recorded in several countries) the album "My Winter Storm" (Universal Music) was released in November 2007. Album was accepted in many ways it wasn't inclining to single genre. (you will find elements of Ambient music, Metal, Rock and Classic) It was unexpectedly built on Tarja's vocals (because of her past with Nightwish a symphonic metal was expected) and guitars got into background. The album didn't make fans of old Nightwish much happier, but on the other hand, it didn't insulted anyone either. Tarja, thanks to a wider range of genre fully learned to use her third-octave vocal range, significantly developed her voice register towards the depths, and led to a perfection of her vibrato (vocal technique). "My Winter Storm" album lifted her as a musician. she participated in the most of the songs as an author, either musically and textually. The only track she entirely composed by herself was finnish song "Oasis", based on the theme music of "Hans Zimmer". Many great musicians participated on the album, musicians such as cellist Martin Tillman or the Czech Film Orchestra. The album was selling very well and very soon it became platinum in Finland and in Russia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Germany and Slovakia it; received gold award.
<br>
<br>
<img src="img 0345.jpg" align="right">
In 2007 Tarja had a small series of rock concerts called "Warm Up Tour", followed by other european and american "Storm tour". Tarja has managed to surround herself with a great band, which is sometimes changing due to commitments of individual musicians, but it always applies to these members: Mike Terrana (Masterplan, Savage Circus, ex-Rage, ex-Yngwie Malmsteen), Max Lilja (ex-Apocalyptica), Maria Ilmoniemi, Christian Kretschmar, Doug Wimbish (Living Colour), Oliver Holzwarth (Blind Guardian, ex-Sieges Even), Alex Scholpp (ex-Farmer Boys) and Kiko Loureiro (Angra).
<br>
<br>
The world tour continued under the names "Storm Returns To Europe" and "Storm Returns To America" in 2008. It was a beginning of successful and work-filled years. Tarja concerts, hosted at live events (Doro, Rata Blanca). The first North American tour followed by a further "Summer Storm Tour" and "Final Storm Tour" in 2009. Meanwhile, Tarja performs in several prestigious concerts (Gala Concert-Baltic Sea Festival, "SOI Suvessa" classical music festival in Mantyharju).
<br>
<br>
<center>
<img src="img 0346.jpg">
</center>
<br>
<br>
The end of the world tour for the album "My Winter Storm" didn't mean an end of touring for Tarja. She participated in a unique Halloween performances in her homeland, where she was accompanied by the local philharmonic orchestra in Tampere, and she also organized the traditional series of Christmas concerts, along with other prestigious finnish musicians. The end of this extremely successful year, she celebrated with a concert in Moscow where she was accompanied by symphonic orchestra.
<br>
<br>
Even at the beginning of 2010 we didn't find Tarja to idle. After a short break, which she had spent with her family, she devoted herself to preparations of her long-awaited second solo album, entitled "What Lies Beneath" (what lies beneath the surface). After more than two years of composing, was about a time when Tarja presented herself not only as an extremely talented singer, but also capable composer and pianist. Knowing that the only way "What Lies Beneath" is a perfect reflection of her artistic vision, taking responsibility for all aspects of the recordings on his shoulders. She chose with her band 17 best songs of the original thirty, but only eleven songs made it to the standard album.
<br>
<br>
<img src="img 0347.jpg" width="260" align="right">
But the biggest challenge for Tarja was after the recording of individual passages, the singer decided not only to compose the album but also produce it. She wanted to avoid the unfortunate outcome of this process at the first solo achievement, when she wasn't satisfied with the final sound of guitars. Follow mix was taking place in London, where the famous guru of modern metal, Colin Richardson (Slipknot, Machine Head) took care of seven rock songs. in Austin, capital city of Texas she cooperate with Tim Palmer (HIM), who worked on slower and epic songs and finally in Los Angeles, where a member of team of Hans Zimmer, Slamm Andrews, finished sound finesse.
<br>
<br>
<img src="img 0348.jpg" width="260" align="right">
Tarja chose many guests for her album, we can mention names like Joe Satriani, Van Canto or Phil Labonte (All That Remains). Another particularity of this album is a cover of song "Still Of The Night" from the rock veterans Whitesnake, which will be available in limited edition. For the first time the fans could listen to the album during Tarja's summer tour, consisting of eight performances at prestigious european festivals as "Wacken Open Air" and "Masters Of Rock".
Tarja won the listeners of other genres thanks to duet "The Good Die Young" with legendary Scorpions, sang for their last album "Sting In The Tail" and the upcoming tour with a horror bard Alice Cooper.
<br>
<h2>2011-
</h2>
<img src="img 0349.jpg" align=left width="200">Tour continued in March 2011 by concerts in Latin America and Brasilia. After her return to Europe Tarja renewed her cooperation with "UNICEF", when she and Jyrki Linnankivi from The 69 Eyes released charitable duet version of "Underneath", dedicated to people in Japan struck by disaster. They sung this song live on "Idols Tekee Hyvaa" in Helsinki.
<br>
<br>
After her charitable activities Tarja returns back on stage, first on tour in Germany and Western Europe countries, followed by summer and festival events. She will perform on Savonlinna Opera Festival again, this time with argentinean tenor Jose Curo.
<br>

That time nobody knew what a revolution in the world of music, a band named after the very first written song reaches.
<br>
<img src="img 0339.jpg" align="right">
Tarja especially was going through a difficult time, metal scene was something completely new and unexplored for her, so as a classical singer she had to find a compromise between metal and classical music. It wasn't easy for her at the beginning, even when they was recording the album it was accompanied by tears, when she was trying to sing difficult high-pitched vocal lines.
<br>
<br>

<h2>2000-2005
</h2>
<br>
<br>
<img src="img 0340.jpg" align="left">
<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
<img src="img 0341.jpg" align="left">
<br>
<br>
At the end of 2002, she married her longtime partner, argentinean businessman Marcelo Cabuli, the owner of a South American record company "NEMS Enterprises". Shortly after their marriage her husband became her manager.
<br>
<br>

<img src="img 0342.jpg" align="right">
After the graduation at the Music Academy in Karlsruhe, in January 2004, Tarja had further minitour "Noche Escandinava" in South America and Romania.
<br>
<br>
<img src="img 0343.jpg" align="left">

<h2>2006-2010
</h2>
<img src="img 0344.jpg" align="right">
In August appeared on the Lahti Organ Festival and on action of clothing company "Marimekko" she surprised by a song by Nirvana.
<br>
<br>

<br>
<img src="img 0345.jpg" align="right">
In 2007 Tarja had a small series of rock concerts called "Warm Up Tour", followed by other european and american "Storm tour".
<br>
<br>

<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
<img src="img 0347.jpg" width="260" align="right">
But the biggest challenge for Tarja was after the recording of individual passages, the singer decided not only to compose the album but also produce it.
<br>
<br>
<img src="img 0348.jpg" width="260" align="right">
Tarja chose many guests for her album, we can mention names like Joe Satriani, Van Canto or Phil Labonte (All That Remains).

<h2>2011-
</h2>
<br>
<br>
After her charitable activities Tarja returns back on stage, first on tour in Germany and Western Europe countries, followed by summer and festival events. She will perform on Savonlinna Opera Festival again, this time with argentinean tenor Jose Curo.
